| "Hello.......cough, cough. My name is Harding P. Woodrow, and this is my nurse, Nelly Porter. Many years ago, patients traveled to Kerrville from all over the country to be treated for lung diseases, particularly the dreaded tuberculosis. With no wonder drugs available, treatment consisted primarily of fresh air, wholesome food, and plenty of rest. I myself came here from Pennsylvania -- I was only 17 at the time, and had always been a sickly child. However, with the good care of wonderful doctors and nurses at the sanitarium, I have managed to live a long and useful life. |  |

Like many former patients, I built a family and a business here, and contributed much to the community through civic endeavors. There are times when the ghost of my disease does come back to haunt me, but then Nurse Porter soon has me back on my feet. I am very appreciative of the good life afforded me here in the Hill Country." "As Mr. Woodrow has explained, I am a nurse here in Kerrville; while semi-retired now, I still have my pets who will allow only me to tend to their needs in time of illness. I have devoted my life to caring for the ill, ever since my late fiancee, Thomas Martin DeLong, was taken from me in an untimely fashion. Actually, the untimely fashion was named Carmen Elena Pena, but that is another story altogether!! Since that sad event, my focus has been to ease the pain and suffering of others." |
